About the Conference

FEANTSA’s European Observatory on Homelessness, University of Bergamo and fio.PSD are pleased to announce the 15th Anniversary European Research Conference on Homelessness in Bergamo, Italy.
This is Europe’s leading research conference on homelessness and will explore recent evidence on the broad theme of homelessness and housing exclusion from across Europe and elsewhere. Early career researchers are also invited to present their research activities.

The Conference will start on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 14:00. Optional field visits are planned for the morning of Thursday. The conference dinner will be held on Thursday evening. The conference will end on Friday, September 25, 2020 with a drinks reception around 19:30. Simultanous interpretation from English to Italian will be available in the plenary session.


Keynote speakers

Chiara Saraceno (IT) - corresponding fellow of the British Academy
Chiara Saraceno has research interests in family arrangements and family change; gender and intergenerational relations; welfare states and social policies; poverty and social exclusion. Until 2008 she was a Professor of sociology of the family at the University of Torino, holding a broad range of positions at the University since 1991. She is member of the Italian Poverty Commission, which she chaired in the period 1999-2001. Between 2006 and 2011 she held a research professorship "Demographic Development, Social Change, and Social Capital" at the Social Science Center Berlin (WZB). Since 2011 she has been corresponding fellow of the British Academy. Her publications cover the broad themes of social inequality and social policy.


Dan O’Flaherty (USA) - Professor of Urban Economics at Columbia University & member of the Columbia University Senate
Dan O’Flaherty is Professor of Urban Economics at Columbia University and member of the Columbia University Senate. Professor O’Flaherty has published widely on homelessness,  authoring numerous books including Making Room: The Economics of Homelessness, City Economics, How to House the Homeless, and most recently, with Rajiv Sethi, Shadows of Doubt:  Stereotypes, Crime, and the Pursuit of Justice.

Submission Details

Please submit an abstract in English (max. 300 words) and a short bio (max. 100 words) by April 24, 2020. Successful conference submissions will be notified by mid May 2020. Final PowerPoint presentations will be due by August 20, 2020. Submissions and further enquiries should be directed to


Venue and Fees

The Conference will be held at University of Bergamo Campus, Italy. The conference fee is 175 EURO (incl. meals and coffee breaks during the conference). Accommodation package on a first come first served basis will be available upon registration from June 15, 2020. Presenters and PhD students pay a reduced fee of 100 EURO.
